What is query fan-out?

By the Variask team · Updated

Definition

Query fan-out is when an AI engine splits one question into several related searches, runs them together and blends the results into one answer.

Also called Fan-out queries, Sub queries

With Variask: Variask shows the real searches AI engines ran behind your prompts, most repeated first, plus predicted ones, so you know which pages to write next.

How query fan-out works

Ask an assistant for the best running shoes for flat feet and it will rarely search for that exact phrase alone. It may also search for stability shoes, reviews from running sites, current prices and the latest models. Each of those searches pulls in different pages, and the answer is written from the mix.

Google has described this approach for AI Mode, and ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot behave the same way when they search the web.

Why it matters

  • You can rank first for the question a person typed and still be left out, because the answer leaned on the sub searches.
  • The sub searches are often more specific than the original question: features, use cases, prices, comparisons and recent news.
  • Pages that answer those narrower questions directly are more likely to be pulled in and cited.

What it means for brands

  • Map the sub questions behind your most important buyer prompts, then make sure a page of yours answers each one.
  • Comparison, pricing and use case pages tend to match fan-out searches well.
  • Track which of the fan-out searches you already rank for, and close the gaps.
