Key facts
- AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's search index and ranking systems.
- There is no special markup that guarantees inclusion; standard SEO best practices apply.
- AI Mode tends to run several related searches behind one question.
- Cited links in AI Overviews can send traffic, which shows in Search Console as normal web results.
How Google picks sources
Google has said that its AI features rely on the same core systems as Search. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can be used. From there, pages that are helpful, relevant and clearly written for the question have the best chance of being cited.
What to do
- 1Make sure important pages are indexed and not blocked from snippets.
- 2Answer the question directly near the top of the page, then add depth.
- 3Cover the related questions people ask next, since AI Mode explores them.
- 4Use clear headings, lists and tables for facts like prices, specs and comparisons.
- 5Keep structured data accurate and consistent with what the page says.
- 6Track whether you are cited and named for your key questions, in each market you sell in.
