What are AI citations?

By the Variask team · Updated

Definition

AI citations are the links an AI assistant shows next to its answer to point to the pages it used, such as the numbered sources in Perplexity or the source links in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.

Also called Cited sources, AI references

With Variask: Variask lists every source cited in your tracked answers, the content types engines prefer and the sites cited when competitors win.

Why citations matter

  • Citations send clicks. They are the main way AI answers drive traffic to websites.
  • They show which pages shape the answer, including pages about you that you do not own.
  • A citation to your page is also a signal of trust in your content for that topic.

How to earn more citations

  1. 1Find the pages already cited for your key prompts.
  2. 2Publish pages that answer those prompts more clearly and with more specific facts.
  3. 3Get included on the third party pages that are cited, such as reviews, lists and forums.
  4. 4Make sure AI search crawlers can reach and read your pages.

What it means for brands

  • Being cited and being mentioned are different; track both.
  • Third party citations often outnumber your own, so earned media is part of the job.
