What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

By the Variask team · Updated

Definition

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic, that lets AI assistants connect to outside tools and data through MCP servers, in a common way.

Also called MCP

With Variask: The Variask MCP server brings your AI visibility, prompts, sources and site issues into Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and other MCP clients.

How MCP works

An MCP server exposes tools, such as get the latest sales numbers, and data. An MCP client, such as Claude, Cursor or another AI app, connects to the server and lets the model call those tools while it works. One server works with many clients, so a company builds the connection once.

Why it matters for marketers

  • Your data can come to the AI tools your team already uses, instead of staying in separate dashboards.
  • AI agents can act on that data, for example drafting a page from your real gaps.

What it means for brands

  • Expect more buyers and teams to work inside AI assistants connected to tools through MCP.
