What is a prompt gap?

By the Variask team · Updated

Definition

A prompt gap is a buyer question where AI recommends one or more competitors but not you. Prompt gaps are the clearest list of opportunities in AI search, because they show exactly where rivals win the answer.

Also called Competitor gap

With Variask: Variask lists prompt gaps as opportunities, with the competitors that win and the sources behind them.

How it works

  • Track questions for you and your competitors.
  • Find the questions where competitors are named and you are not.
  • Rank them by how close they are to revenue.
  • Study the answers and cited sources to see why.

What it means for brands

  • Start your AEO work with the prompt gaps closest to revenue.
  • A gap often points to a missing page or a missing source.
