How to calculate it
Take a fixed set of buyer prompts and the answers AI engines give to them. Count how many times each brand is named. Your share of voice is your mentions divided by all brand mentions across those answers. Some teams weight mentions by position, since the first name in an answer gets more attention.
Why it matters
Visibility tells you how often you appear. Share of voice tells you how much of the conversation you own against rivals. A category leader can have modest visibility but a large share of voice if competitors appear even less.
What it means for brands
- Use share of voice to set goals against named competitors, not in isolation.
- Break it down by engine, topic and market to see where a rival is winning.
