How to measure share of voice in AI

By the Variask team · Updated

In short

AI share of voice is your brand's share of all brand mentions in AI answers to a fixed set of buyer questions. To measure it, choose the questions and competitors, ask each question several times on each engine, count mentions for every brand, divide yours by the total, and report it over time with a likely range.

Key facts

  • Share of voice = your mentions divided by all tracked brand mentions.
  • Use the same prompt set every time, or the trend means nothing.
  • Repeat each prompt, because answers vary.
  • Report by engine and market, not only as one total.

Step by step

  1. 1Pick 50 to 150 buyer questions across your products and markets.
  2. 2List the competitors you want to compare against.
  3. 3Ask each question on each AI engine, more than once.
  4. 4Count how many answers mention each brand.
  5. 5Divide your mentions by the total mentions of all tracked brands.
  6. 6Repeat weekly with the same questions.
  7. 7Report the trend, the range and the competitors gaining on you.

Share of voice vs visibility

Visibility is the share of answers that name you, out of all answers. Share of voice is your share of all brand mentions, so it shows how you compare with rivals. Use both: visibility tells you how often you show up, share of voice tells you whether you are winning.
