Key facts
- ChatGPT combines what the model learned in training with pages it finds through live search.
- Answers with live sources favour pages that are crawlable, specific and easy to quote.
- Third party reviews, forums and comparison pages strongly shape which brands get named.
- The same steps work for Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI, with different source mixes.
The playbook
- 1Check access: allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User in robots.txt, and make sure your firewall lets them through.
- 2List the questions buyers ask, such as best, versus, alternatives, pricing and how to, in each market you sell in.
- 3Measure first: see which of those prompts name you, which name competitors, and which sources are cited.
- 4Write answer-first pages for the prompts you lose, with a direct answer, specifics, comparisons and an FAQ.
- 5Win the cited sources: get listed and reviewed on the third party pages ChatGPT relies on for your topic.
- 6Fix wrong facts: update the pages that carry an old price, feature or policy, and ask third parties to correct theirs.
- 7Add structured data for your organization, products and FAQs so facts are unambiguous.
- 8Re-measure every week and keep doing what moved the number.
What does not work
- Stuffing pages with keywords or hidden text written for bots.
- Publishing many thin pages that repeat the same claims.
- Judging progress from a single chat: one answer is not a trend.
