What is a knowledge cutoff?

By the Variask team · Updated

Definition

A knowledge cutoff is the date after which an AI model has no information from its training data. Anything that happened later is unknown to the model unless it searches the web or is given the facts.

Also called Training cutoff, Training data cutoff

With Variask: Variask flags wrong or outdated facts in AI answers about your brand and points to the pages they likely came from.

Why models have a cutoff

A language model is trained on a snapshot of data collected up to a point in time. Training and testing take months, so a model is often released well after its cutoff, and it stays in use for a long time after that.

What the cutoff means in practice

  • Without search, a model may describe your old pricing, old product names or a competitor landscape that has changed.
  • With search turned on, the model can fill the gap, but only with what it finds and trusts.
  • Different engines and model versions have different cutoffs, so the same question can get different answers.

What it means for brands

  • If you launched, renamed or repriced recently, expect some AI answers to be out of date until engines search or retrain.
  • Publish changes clearly and get them covered on sites that AI engines cite, so search based answers pick them up quickly.
  • Check answers from several engines, not one, because cutoffs differ.

Knowledge cutoff:
common questions

Most AI companies publish it in their model documentation. Ask the assistant directly too, but treat its own answer with care.

Not directly. You can make the right facts easy to find on the web, which helps when the model searches, and over time future training data will include them.
