Microsoft Copilot for brands

By the Variask team · Updated

In short

Microsoft Copilot is built into Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365, so it reaches many people at work. It grounds answers in Bing search results, which makes your presence in Bing a key part of being recommended in Copilot.

  • Grounds answers in Bing search results.
  • Built into Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365.
  • Bingbot is the crawler to allow.

How Microsoft Copilot builds an answer

  • Copilot searches Bing for the question and cites the pages it uses.
  • It is often used at work, so business software and services questions are common.
  • Answers reflect the user's market and language.

Let it read your site

Copilot relies on Bing's index, crawled by Bingbot. Allow Bingbot, submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools, and consider IndexNow so new pages are found quickly.

Measure it properly

Microsoft Copilot answers change from one run to the next, and by country, language and wording. One chat is not a trend. Track the same set of buyer questions every week, run each more than once, and look at the share of answers that name you, the position you appear in, and the sources cited. Variask does this for Microsoft Copilot and every other major AI engine.

Questions

Common questions

Mostly the same good practices apply, but check Bing Webmaster Tools for crawl problems and make sure your pages are indexed there, because Copilot depends on it.

Copilot uses OpenAI models along with Microsoft's own, but it is a separate product grounded in Bing, so its answers can differ from ChatGPT's.
