What is answer volatility?

By the Variask team · Updated

Definition

Answer volatility is how much AI answers to the same question change from one run to the next, or from week to week. High volatility means a single check can be misleading, so scores need many answers and a likely range.

Also called AI answer variance

With Variask: Variask repeats answers per prompt, shows a likely range and marks each change as real or normal noise.

How it works

  • AI engines generate answers with some randomness.
  • Live search results and model updates add more change.
  • Volatility is measured by asking the same question repeatedly and comparing who is named.
  • Stable brands are named almost every time or almost never.

What it means for brands

  • Never judge your AI visibility from one screenshot.
  • Report changes only when they are bigger than normal volatility.
