Definition
Google AI Overviews are AI written summaries shown at the top of some Google search results, with links to the pages used. They grew out of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE).

AI Overviews are generated from Google's search index, so pages need to be indexed and eligible for search to appear. Google says no special markup is required; helpful, clear content and normal SEO best practices apply. The cited pages are not always the top ranking results.

Google offers controls such as nosnippet, but they also limit how your page appears in normal results. Most brands aim to be cited instead.
